As the River Thames plays such an crucial role in the shape and culture of Southwest London, riverside neighbourhoods like Putney continue to occupy a high profile. Like Fulham on the opposing river bank, Putney is known for great maritime views, tranquil open spaces and a relaxed atmosphere. Putney extends southwards from the river and backs up onto Putney Heath.
